The pressure of a Star Wars project is a familiar, almost comforting weight. It’s a gravity well that pulls every creative decision towards authenticity, towards that lived-in feeling we all know and love. For us at Massive, that pressure wasn't a burden; it was the forge in which we shaped Star Wars Outlaws. Our ambition? To craft an open-world RPG that feels both unmistakably Star Wars and refreshingly new, a story told from the ground level, far from the epic clashes of Jedi and Sith. This is a tale of survival, of found family, and of the grimy, vibrant underworld that thrives in the shadows of the galaxy.

The Heart of a Scoundrel: Designing Kay Vess

From the very first sketch, Kay Vess had to feel real. We didn't just want a character; we wanted a person who belonged in this galaxy. She’s a scoundrel, sure, but she’s also new to the game—a bit of a rookie, honestly. Every detail of her design tells a story of her life in Canto Bight's Worker's District. That hairpin in her bun? It’s secretly a dataspike, a thief's tool disguised as a simple accessory. Her soft-soled boots are perfect for sneaking through back alleys, and that holster hanging off her side? It speaks to a readiness that's become second nature.

Her jacket went through a rainbow of colors during development—a real journey, let me tell you—but one thing remained constant: Nix. We designed them as a duo from the start. The scratches on the back of her jacket? Those are from him. The little tattoo of Nix on her wrist? That's their bond, inked into her skin. It’s these small, lived-in details that make her feel like she’s been surviving in this world long before the player hits start.

A New Kind of Family: Creating Nix the Merqaal

Ah, Nix. Designing him was an absolute joy. We knew Kay needed a companion, but not just a sidekick. He had to be family. For inspiration, we looked no further than our own homes—at our cats curling up on keyboards and our dogs with their expressive eyes. That's the soul we poured into Nix. He can be incredibly cuddly, melting into a puddle of purrs for a belly rub, but don't let that fool you. Those claws and teeth are sharp! He’s a perfect blend of familiar pet and alien creature.

Meet the Merqaal:

  • Origin: Jungle planet survivors.

  • Defenses: Scaly back for protection, dexterous paws with big claws, and sharp teeth.

  • Unique Trait: Their 'feelers'! These aren't just for show. Nix uses them to sense danger in the environment and to communicate with Kay. Feelers up? He's excited or found something. Curled down? He's cautious. It’s a silent language all their own.

An Iconic Duo for a New Era

Star Wars is built on legendary duos. Han and Chewie. Mando and Grogu. For Kay and Nix, we wanted to add something unique to that lineage. Their bond isn't one forged in adventure; it was forged in childhood. They grew up together, struggling to survive. In a galaxy where Kay trusts almost no one, Nix is the crack in her armor—her heart, her vulnerability. We infused so much of our own love for our pets into their dynamic. When writing scenes or working with our incredible actors, the goal was always clear: show that Nix isn't a pet. He's home.

The criminal underworld isn't a monolith. It's a tapestry of distinct syndicates, each with its own flavor, and making them feel unique was crucial.

As Kay dives into this world, she inevitably crosses paths with legends. Bringing in characters like Jabba the Hutt was a daunting task. We had incredible reference from Lucasfilm, down to the slime around his nostrils and the details of his tail wound. It was about honoring the legacy while making him feel present and tangible in our story. And then there's Lando Calrissian. Why Lando? Simple. He has that perfect mix of swagger, charm, and complexity that plays off Kay's rookie perspective beautifully. Plus, the man knows how to rock a cape. It’s a fact.

A Story Without the Force

This was a core pillar for us. We wanted to tell a story focused on characters who are not only outside the galactic conflict but have no experience with the Force or the Jedi. Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, this is an era where those powers are myths, whispers on the wind. That's not our story to tell. Ours is the story of Kay, Nix, and their droid ND-5 navigating dogfights in the Trailblazer, exploring open worlds teeming with exotic wildlife, and hustling in cities packed with scoundrels. It's an immersion into a corner of the galaxy many have felt, but few have truly lived in.

The Devil (and the Delight) is in the Details

So much love went into the little things. Getting Kay's silhouette instantly recognizable was key—the hair bun with dataspike, the cut of her jacket, even her sneakers. For Nix, introducing a whole new species to Star Wars lore was a responsibility we didn't take lightly. Every scale, every feeler twitch, had to support his backstory and role.

And the ship! Designing the Trailblazer was a blast. It's not just a vehicle; it's Kay's home. We drew from the weirdest references—turtles, 70s monorails, strange old prototypes—to create something that felt unique yet functional, a place that changes and grows with the player.

The Sound of the Underworld

The music had to walk a fine line. John Williams' iconic themes for the original trilogy were our north star, providing that timeless melodic heart. But for the grungy, diverse criminal underworld, we needed a new sound. We blended the classic orchestration with analog synthesizers, found percussion, and world instruments played in unconventional ways. Each faction, each planet, has its own sonic palette. As you delve deeper into the underworld, those processed, synth-based sounds become more prominent, weaving the traditional and the new into a score that feels both familiar and fresh.

Legacy and New Life

Even elements with established history, like the mighty Krayt Dragon, required careful thought. We were fortunate to collaborate closely with Lucasfilm, using references from contemporary productions to ensure our version felt authentic to the latest visual language of the galaxy. It’s a reminder that we're not just creating in a vacuum; we're adding a new thread to a vast and ever-growing tapestry.

In the end, Star Wars Outlaws is our love letter to the side of Star Wars we've always wanted to explore more deeply. It's about the struggle to carve out a life, the unbreakable bond with a non-human companion, and the thrilling, dangerous dance with the galaxy's most infamous syndicates. We can't wait for you to meet Kay and Nix, to step aboard the Trailblazer, and to write your own story in a galaxy far, far away... from a perspective you've never had before.
