Ubisoft has moved to calm the growing backlash surrounding the Star Wars Outlaws season pass structure. The publisher issued a new statement insisting that Jabba the Hutt and the Hutt Cartel remain part of the core experience for every owner, regardless of edition.

The controversy began after promotional materials revealed that a mission called Jabba’s Gambit would be locked behind the season pass. That pass is included with the $109.99 Gold Edition and the $129.99 Ultimate Edition. Many players argued that a full-price, single-player title should not hide story content behind an additional paywall. The mission description explains that Kay is assembling a crew for the Canto Bight heist when she receives a job from Jabba the Hutt. ND-5, her droid partner, owes Jabba a debt from years ago, and the Hutt has come to collect.

Ubisoft then provided a clarification to IGN. A Ubisoft spokesperson said: ‘To clarify, Jabba the Hutt and the Hutt Cartel are one of the main syndicates in Star Wars Outlaws and will be part of the experience for everyone who purchases the game, regardless of edition. The Jabba’s Gambit mission is an optional, additional mission with the Hutt Cartel along Kay and Nix’s journey across the Outer Rim. This mission will be available to those who purchase the season pass or an edition of the game which includes the season pass.’

The statement drew a mixed response. While some players welcomed the assurance that Jabba would not be completely removed from standard versions, others pointed out that the exact scope of Jabba’s Gambit remains unclear. Without a clear explanation of what the mission contains, buyers of the standard edition still do not know precisely what they are missing. Ubisoft has previously said that players can work for, and even betray, Jabba as the head of one of Star Wars Outlaws’ criminal factions.

Star Wars Outlaws is a scoundrel adventure set between Star Wars: Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode 6 - Return of the Jedi. It stars Kay Vess, her droid partner ND-5, and her beast companion Nix as they try to carve out success during the criminal golden age. The game launched on August 27, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.

The pricing structure placed the standard edition at $70. The season pass is bundled with two premium editions. The table below shows the core differences.

Edition Price Season Pass Early Access
Standard Edition $69.99 No No
Gold Edition $109.99 Yes 3 days
Ultimate Edition $129.99 Yes 3 days

As of 2026, the debate around Star Wars Outlaws remains a reference point for how publishers communicate premium editions. The issue was never simply whether Jabba would appear, but whether a full-price single-player game should gate an optional mission behind an expensive season pass. The clarification answered part of that question. It did not fully resolve player concerns about content visibility and value.

For those who do not purchase the season pass, Jabba and the Hutt Cartel are still present as a major syndicate. The exclusive mission remains an optional extra layered on top of that system. That distinction may be enough for some players. For others, the lack of detail about Jabba’s Gambit means the season pass still feels like a risky upgrade rather than a clear value proposition.

Ubisoft’s response arrived during a broader industry conversation about monetization in single-player games. Premium editions with early access and story-adjacent missions have become more common. The Star Wars Outlaws example showed how quickly community goodwill can shift when a beloved character is featured in paid bonus content. Ubisoft will need to maintain that balance as it continues to support the game and its criminal underworld.

Market context is sourced from Newzoo, and it helps frame why premium editions and season-pass add-ons—like an optional mission tied to Jabba’s Gambit—can trigger backlash in a full-price single-player release when players perceive unclear value and limited transparency around what content is gated behind higher-priced bundles.
